C’S Of Sport’s Confirms AFCON Game’s To Happen From Kenya After Bukhungu Renovation Measures Taken

Cabinet Secretary (CS )for Sports Salim Mvurya today while in Kakamega County, has disclosed that Bukhungu international Stadium in Kakamega will be completed in readiness for hosting the African Cup of Nations (AFCON) in 2027.

The CS was speaking in today’s visit which was a follow up to the directions that was given by President William Ruto in his development tour in the region.

“Our visit today is to appreciate the work and also to make sure we inspire technical teams to work together and do periodic reviews beginning today and until the deadline is properly reached to completion”, said the Cabinet Secretary.

As the Stadium is one of those flagship projects in Kakamega County, the CS pledged to work together with the County leadership led by H.E governor Fernandez Barasa to ensure that the dream is realized in the Western Region.

Similarly, he disclosed that the international Stadium will be implemented in record, assuring the public that the national government is committed to ensuring the facility meets the required standards including offering a world-class venue for a variety of events.

“The 2027 AFCON is a great opportunity for our country, and we cannot afford delays in infrastructure development. I have instructed the Ministry of Sports to ensure Bukhungu Stadium is fully completed and ready for use ahead of the tournament,”explained the Cabinet Secretary.

The Cabinet Secretary was accompanied by the Permanent Secretary of Sports Peter Tum a long sided local leader, led by FCPA Fernandez Barasa the Kakamega Governor, who expressed confidence in the progress of the stadium’s construction.

“I assure each and every one that ; measures are being taken to meet the stringent requirements for hosting the tournament. Our Stadium Will play a pivotal role in enhancing sports development in the region”, explained H.E the governor.

He went on;

“As a county, we are excited about the opportunities this stadium will bring. It is not just about football but businesses, jobs, and prestige that come with hosting major sporting events,” Barasa said.

Apart from the Bukhungu international Stadium, the Ministry of sports is working in Bungoma County at Kanduyi Stadium which is 90 percent completion in the next few weeks adding that they’ll be fitting in 10, 000 seats

He highlighted that talent development and talent naturing in the country is the key factor and as a ministry they’ll continue to work with County governments to ensure that we have inspired young talents to realize their potentials.

Governor Barasa expressed that it was a follow up of the visit by the President in January 1, this year and one thing he appreciated is the directive of the President to deliver Bukhungu by June 2026 to have been completed.
